Die Vorlesung verfolgt die Ausbreitung kommerzieller und gewerblicher Institutionen, die innerhalb der europäischen Agrargesellschaft den Weg der Moderne vorzeichnen. Vor dem Hintergrund der Besonderheiten europäischer Wirtschaftsentwicklung läßt sich die Spur "moderner" Innovationen geographisch und wirtschaftlich quer durch den Kontinent verfolgen (Ostseeraum, Oberdeutschland, Norditalien, Niederlande), ehe sie in der industriellen Revolution in England ihren sichtbaren Durchbruch findet. Die Sackgassen dieser Entwicklung (Spanien) und alternative Modelle (Frankreich) werden nicht ausgespart.
