Nelson Goodmans Languages of Art ist vor allem ein systematischer Versuch, eine allgemeine Symboltheorie aufzustellen. Dass dieser Versuch bei Fragen ansetzt, die Kunstwerke betreffen, ist kein Zufall, denn die von Goodman besprochenen Begriffe können bei der Anwendung auf künstlerische Arbeiten zu besonders rätselhaften Problemstellungen führen, die z. B. Fragen der Echtheit und der Wiederholung sowie des Status von Originalen und Reproduktionen betreffen. ? In diesem Seminar soll es unter anderem darum gehen, Goodmans symboltheoretische Analysen und Thesen anhand zahlreicher Beispiele aus dem Bereich der Künste zu erläutern und zu überprüfen.
Für eine Leistungsbescheinigung im BA-Studiengang kann zwischen einer kleinen Hausarbeit (6-8 Seiten) oder einem ausgearbeiteten Referat/Thesenpapier oder einem ausgearbeiteten Sitzungsprotokoll gewählt werden.
