Während die Geschichte der Kirchen und der Diakonie in den ersten sechs Jahren des "Dritten Reiches" als sehr gut erforscht gelten kann, klaffen für den Zeitraum des Zweiten Weltkriegs in der Kirchen- und Diakoniegeschichte noch immer breite Lücken. Der Kurs soll, weitgehend aufbauend auf dem Studium von Originalquellen, verschiedene Themenkomplexe behandeln: Die Haltung der Kirchen zum Krieg; das Verhältnis zwischen verfasster Kirche, Diakonie und NS-Regime unter den Bedingungen des Krieges; die Konfrontation von verfasster Kirche und Diakonie mit "Euthanasie" und Holocaust; Zwangsarbeit in Kirche und Diakonie; der Beitrag der Kirchen zu Opposition und Widerstand; die Verfolgung von Geistlichen; Kirchlichkeit im Krieg; Gemeindearbeit unter den Bedingungen des Luftkriegs; die Kirchen und das Kriegsende. Dabei werden, soweit es der Forschungsstand erlaubt, evangelische und katholische Kirche, Innere Mission und Caritas in vergleichender Perspektive behandelt.
