Wissen über die Bibel kann die Lektüre der Bibel nicht ersetzen, aber doch erleichtern. Die alttestamentliche Bibelkunde ist daher insbesondere als eine Lektürehilfe und -begleitung gedacht, deren Ziel es ist, die alttestamentlichen Texte kennenzulernen und mit ihnen vertraut zu werden.
Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt wird die Frage nach dem Verständnis zentraler alttestamentlichen Texte in Geschichte und Gegenwart sein, weil kein Text losgelöst von seiner Rezeption gesehen werden kann.
