Im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert noch eine Selbstverständlichkeit, verloren Unternehmerinnen im Verlauf der Industrialisierung offenbar an Zahl und an Bedeutung. Der vermeintliche oder reale Rückgang von Unternehmerinnen wird anhand von Beispielen aus verschiedenen Wirtschaftsbereichen und in verschiedenen europäischen Ländern überprüft. Diskutiert wird auch, inwieweit veränderte Konzepte des "Unternehmers" dazu beitrugen, Unternehmerinnen in der Wirtschaft bzw. in der Gesellschaft zu marginalisieren.
