This study group will focus on picture books, comics and graphic novels, exploring a number of possible questions, such as their similarities and differences , prevalent topics, the representation of cultural elements, and also asking who is represented in them, and how? What kind of language do these texts use? How is narrative created from verbal and visual elements, and how do they work together? And how do they relate to the cultural aspects? Depending on how many future teachers are in the SG, we can also explore different ways to use picture books, comics and graphic novels in primary and secondary school classrooms and/or how to use them in inclusive classrooms. The specific topics will be discussed and decided on together in the group during the first sessions, so nothing is set to stone here.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
As this is a 'Studiengruppe' and involves only students, all participants will be actively involved at all levels, for example in choosing material, preparing short talks or leading discussions, presenting analyses of specific material, deciding how to structure the sessions, etc. Students can gain 3 credit points for "Internationalisation at Home" by participating. To get your “Studienleistung” you will be asked to bring a picture book / comic / graphic novel of your choice and use it to present a certain topic. Topics and criteria for this presentation will be discussed in the first sessions, too. Please bring your picture book, comic or graphic novel to the first session if you have it at home, or else decide comic or graphic novel you would like to present. It will be easier to discuss the class schedule if we know what kind of material you have. If you don't have English picture books, graphic novels or comics at home you will find a lot of suitable material in the Stadtbibliothek Bielefeld (and probably also in other public libraries).
