Die Entwicklung der Schule im historischen Prozess stellt die Ausgangssituation für diese Veranstaltung dar. Schulgründungen gingen einher mit der Vergesellschaftlichung von Erziehung. Schulen entstehen immer dort, wo die familiale Erziehung nicht mehr ausreicht, um den gesellschaftlichen Ansprüchen an den Menschen gerecht zu werden. Daraus ergibt sich zwangsläufig die Frage nach den Funktionen von Schule für die Gesellschaft. Was soll Schule für die Gesellschaft leisten? Pädagogisch-programmatische Postulate vermengen sich mit ökonomischen, staatstragenden und qualifikatorischen Anforderungen und sorgen für scheinbar unaufhebbare Widersprüche, die bis heute die Schulrealität belasten.
