Die Ethnologie bildet insbesondere für die außereuropäische Geschichte eine zentrale historische Nachbardisziplin. Bereits die europäischen Missionare und Reisenden des frühen Kolonialzeitalters (16.-18. Jahrhundert) entwickelten eine ethnographische Tradition, aus der im 20. Jahrhundert die moderne Ethnologie hervorging. Das Grundseminar behandelt aus historischer und systematischer Perspektive wichtige Autoren, Theorien und Methoden der ethnologischen Forschung und deren Bedeutung für die Geschichtswissenschaft. Diese allgemeinen Aspekte werden anhand der Untersuchung multiethnischer Gesellschaften in der Geschichte Lateinamerikas vertieft.
