Gegenstand der VL sind Grundlagen der Kriminologie, Erscheinungsformen von Kriminalität und abweichendem Verhalten und Fragen nach den Ursachen von Kriminalität. Behandelt werden die Theorien der Kriminalitätsentstehung in Geschichte und Gegenwart, der aktuelle Wissensstand zur Kriminalitätsforschung und soziale Reaktionen auf Kriminalität. Es geht weiter um Methoden der Erkenntnisgewinnung und die Wechselbeziehungen von Kriminologie und Strafrecht, Strafverfahrensrecht sowie anderen Bezugsdisziplinen.
Es besteht die Gelegenheit zum Erwerb des Grundlagenscheins gemäß § 8 Abs. 1 Nr. 5 JAG NW 1993 (Scheinerwerb ist erst nach Abschluss des dritten Fachsemesters möglich)
Voraussetzung für den Erwerb des Grundlagenscheins ist das Bestehen von zwei Klausuren mit mindestens der Note "ausreichend" (4 Punkte)
