Zu Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts herrschten die Franzosen über fast zwei Drittel des nordamerikanischen Kontinents, von Québec bis New Orleans und von der Hudson Bay bis nacch Louisiana. An die französische Vergangenheit erinnern in Nordamerika heutzutage noch jede Menge Orts- und Familiennamen. Im Gegensatz zu den wesentlich dichter besiedelten englischen Kolonien an der Ostküste erfolgte die französische Herrschaft in Nordamerika in enger Kooperation mit der indianischen Urbevölkerung. Die französischen Siedler und Indianer sowie eingeschleppte Sklaven aus Afrika (in Louisiana) gaben diesem Kolonialreich ein besonderes kulturelles Gepräge.
Im Zentrum des Seminars steht die Lektüre des inzwischen mehrfach aufgelegten Standardwerks „Histoire de l'Amérique française“ von Gilles Havard und Cécile Vidal, die beide in Paris an der École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) tätig sind. Das Buch bietet einen fundierten und gut verständlichen Überblick zu allen wichtigen sozial- und wirtschaftsgeschichtlichen Zusammenhängen.

Es müssen mindestens Grundkenntnisse der französischen Sprache vorhanden sein.

In Abhängigkeit vom Sprachniveau sollen kürzere oder längere Auszüge aus dem Buch gelesen und französische Wortfelder auf dem Gebiet der Kolonialgeschichte erarbeitet werden.
