Die Veranstaltung befaßt sich anhand einschlägiger Textpartien mit der gesprochenen Sprache im antiken Rom; in diesem Semester werden Rede und Redetheorie im Mittelpunkt stehen.
Wir werden uns in einem ersten Teil anhand ausgewählter Texte aus der Redetheorie (Cicero; Rhetorica ad Herennium) eine theoretische Grundlage verschaffen und darüber nachdenken, wie sehr die Rhetorik das ganze Leben eines Römers durchdringt. In einem zweiten Teil werden wir die Redepraxis kennenlernen, indem wir Reden der verschiedenen Gattungen (Gerichtsrede, politische Rede, Festrede, Panegyrik, laudatio funebris) ganz oder in Ausschnitten lesen und analysieren: Selbstverständlich Cicero und Plinius, dann aber auch, wenn wir mehr Sicherheit im Umgang mit den verschiedenen Formen der Rede erlangt haben, Rhetorikkritik und Redepersiflagen bei Petron und Apuleius.
Im Seminar sollen kurze Referate gehalten werden, die die Grundlage für die Hausarbeit bilden können.
