Das Gehirn versetzt Tiere einschließlich des Menschen in die Lage, ihre Umwelt wahrzunehmen und sich in dieser situationsgerecht zu verhalten. Dazu ist es erforderlich, daß Information über die Umwelt von den Sinnesorganen aufgenommen, vom Nervensystem verarbeitet, gespeichert und gegebenenfalls in koordinierte Muskelaktivität transformiert wird. Die für ein Verständnis dieser komplexen Zusammenhänge wesentlichen Grundlagen werden besprochen: 1. Überblick über Bau und Funktion von Nervensystemen. 2. Grundlagen der Erregungsbildung sowie der Weiterleitung in bzw. zwischen Nerven-, Sinnes- und Muskelzellen. 3. Integrative Leistungen von Nervensystemen, insbesondere Verarbeitung von Sinnesinformation, Kontrolle von von Bewegungen und erfahrungsabhängige Prozesse (Lernen und Plastizität) im Nervensystem.
