Wohl kaum ein Begriff erlebt zur Zeit eine solche Hochkonjunktur wie "Zivilgesellschaft". Das gilt für die politische Alltagssprache ebenso wie für wissenschaftliche Abhandlungen vor allem soziologischer und politologischer Provenienz. Auch die Geschichtswissenschaft ist gerade dabei, ihn für sich "wiederzuentdecken"; schließlich reicht die Geschichte dieses Schlüsselbegriffes der Gegenwart bis in die europäische Aufklärung zurück. Auf der Grundlage der Lektüre von normativen Texten von Ferguson über de Tocqueville bis hin zu Walzer und Keane soll in der Übung diskutiert werden, welchen Wandel der Begriff "Zivilgesellschaft" durchlaufen hat und ob er sich als Konzept historischer Praxis eignet
