Unterwegs zu sein hieß im ausgehenden 18. Jahrhundert etwas gänzlich anderes als am Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts. Wer, warum, wohin reiste soll in dem Grundkurs, der in Grundfragen, Methoden und Arbeitstechniken der neueren und neuesten Geschichte einführt, im Wandel der Zeit untersucht werden. Dabei geht es um Ähnlichkeiten und Unterschiede in den Reisemotiven, der Reisepraxis und den Reiseerfahrungen, um ihre Verarbeitung und Verbreitung in Briefen und Reiseberichten, um durch Reisen geprägte und veränderte Selbst- und Fremdbilder
