Friedensethik ist einerseits fachsystematisch ein Teilbereich der Sozialethik. Seit aber die Engel über den Fluren von Bethlehem vom "Frieden den Menschen seiner Gnade" gesungen haben, erhebt sich die Frage, wie eng das Thema Friede verknüpft ist mit dem Christusereignis und damit auch mit der Kirche. Anhand der Geschichte der katholischen Friedensethik soll der Spannung zwischen Teilbereich und Zentralbegriff näher nachgegangen werden. Nicht zuletzt für eine angemessene friedenspädagogische Fundierung religionspädagogischer Bemühungen scheint eine Klärung dieser Spannung unabdingbar.
