Die Veranstaltung will eine Einführung in die wichtigsten Aspekte gesellschaftlicher und ökonomischer Veränderungen in Polen bieten. Nach einer Übersicht über die physischen Rahmenbedingungen (Klima, Geologie, Morphologie, Boden, Vegetation, Naturschätze etc.) soll die demographische Struktur, einschließlich der Binnenmigration, diskutiert werden. Schwerpunkte der weiteren Analyse sind die Agrarpolitik der Nachkriegszeit und die gegenwärtigen ökologischen und sozialen Folgen der Transformation nach der Wende in Polen, sodann die Entwicklung städtischer und industrieller Ballungsräume. Besonderes Augenmerk soll hier auf die Aufbauleistung historischer Altstädte in der Nachkriegszeit, aber auch auf das Problem des städtischen Wohnungsbaus, gerichtet sein. Am Beispiel der wichtigsten urbanen Ballungsräume (Drei-Stadt, Warschau, Oberschlesien) sollen Konzepte sozialistischer und aktueller Regionalplanung aufgezeigt werden.
