Das Grundseminar thematisiert den politischen und sozialen Gehalt der lateinamerikanischen Unabhängigkeitsbewegungen sowie die damit verbundenen Fragen der Staats- und Nationsbildung. Abgesehen von der Einarbeitung in die allgemeinen theoretischen Grundlagen und Forschungsdebatten zu dieser Epoche Lateinamerikas liegt ein geographischer Schwerpunkt des Seminars auf den Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts entstehenden Staaten Mexiko, Kolumbien und Haiti.
