Die Veranstaltung bietet nach der Linearen Algebra einen Einstieg in die höhere Algebra. Themen sind zunächst Gruppen, also das systematische Studium von Symmetrien, und dann Ringe und Körper, im Hinblick auf das Lösen von polynomialen Gleichungen oder auf Konstruktionen mit Zirkel und Lineal. Es werden also klassische Fragestellungen behandelt und zugleich moderne Methoden enwtwickelt, die später auch für andere Gebiete wie Zahlentheorie, Geometrie, Topoplogie und Darstellungstheorie sehr nützlich sind.
