Die Veranstaltung gibt einen Überblick über wichtige Problembereiche der gegenwärtigen Philosophie des Geistes und setzt dabei die Einführung aus dem vorangegangenen Semester fort. Im Einzelnen sollen folgende Themenkomplexe zur Sprache kommen.
(1) Kognitionswissenschaft: Vorgestellt werden die wesentlichen Bestimmungsstücke dieses interdisziplinären Forschungansatzes, insbesondere die Symbolverarbeitungstheorie (und die Kritik an ihr) sowie der Konnektionismus und Theorien der Psychosemantik.
(2) Sinnesqualitäten: Die Klärung der Beschaffenheit von Qualia stellt eine der wichtigsten Herausforderungen für eine physikalistische Position dar. Besprochen werden einschlägige Schwierigkeiten und Versuche zu ihrer Lösung.
(3) Bewusstsein: Einheitlichkeit und kausale Relevanz des Bewusstseins sind durch neuere neuropsychologische Untersuchungen in Zweifel gestellt. Insbesondere ist der Einfluss von Bewusstseinszuständen auf das Verhalten strittig. Besprochen wird die Tragweite der betreffenden Befunde.
