Freimaurerlogen, Lesegesellschaften und gelehrte Sozietäten, Salons, "offene Häuser" und informelle "Kränzchen", Freundesbünde und Vereine - das Jahrhundert zwischen 1750 und 1850 brachte zahlreiche Innovationen im Bereich der kommunikativen Institutionen hervor und gilt deshalb als das "gesellige Zeitalter". Diese Entwicklungen sind seit einiger Zeit intensiv unter sozial-, politik- und kulturgeschichtlichen Vorzeichen untersucht worden. Zugleich ist es eine Epoche, in der das Verhältnis zwischen den Geschlechtern vielfachem Wandel unterlag. Neue Vorstellungen davon, was als "männlich" und was als "weiblich" gelten konnte und welche Verhaltensweisen Legitimität beanspruchen durften, wurden entwickelt und im geselligen Austausch erprobt. Der Kurs dient der Diskussion innovativer Arbeiten, die die beiden Debatten zur Geschichte der Geselligkeit und zur Geschlechtergeschichte um 1800 "zusammengedacht" haben
