Heinrich Heine ist ohne Zweifel nicht nur ein sehr produktiver, sondern auch ein wirklich wichtiger und origineller Schriftsteller des 19. Jahrhunderts. Seine Lyrik und die Versepen, die im Mittelpunkt des Seminars stehen werden, sind einerseits immer Kunst, die auf ihrem Kunst-Status beharrt, ihn ausstellt und einfordert. Auf der anderen Seite haben ganz viele Texte eine unabweisbar politische, manche eine sozialkritische Dimension. Für Heine scheinen Kunst und Politik im weiteren Sinn keine Widersprüche zu sein. Immer wieder äußert sich der Künstler auch als Zeitgenosse, als Beobachter seiner Welt, zum Teil von außen, aus dem Pariser Exil. Karl Kraus' böse gemeinte Äußerung, Heine habe das Feuilleton als Franzosenkrankheit in die deutsche Literatur eingeschleppt, kann man umkgekehrt auch als innovative Leistung Heines verstehen: Er verstand es, Grenzen zu überschreiten und neu zu definieren.
