Es steht außer Frage, dass soziale Ungleichheiten eines der Themen sind, die die Bürger und die Öffentlichkeit am stärksten umtreiben. Dabei konkurrieren Stabilitätsdiagnosen gegen Alarm-Szenarien um Aufmerksamkeit, und beides findet auch seine akademischen Unterstützer. Dass beide Positionen nicht aus der Luft gegriffen sind hat sicherlich auch mit der Vergangenheit und der Zukunft, die beide ihren Schatten auf die gegenwärtige Situation werfen. Damit sind die drei Perspektiven umschrieben, die das Seminar strukturieren: die empirische Bestandsaufnahme hinsichtlich Macht, Geld, Beruf und Lebensführung; die Frage von deren Entwicklung seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg; sowie die Plausibilität von entsprechenden Zukunftserwartungen für die Entwicklung der nächsten Jahre.
