Contents, comment

n the class we will explore key concepts of 19th century American Renaissance thinking such as self-reliance, individualism, self-made man/woman, and pragmatist aesthetics. Texts by R. W. Emerson, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Margaret Fuller, D. H. Thoreau function as primary reading material. Secondary reading material will help us contextualize the texts historically, culturally and in transnational contexts. Active participation includes an oral presentation and a short paper.
