This seminar focuses on terrorism trials of German nationals who individually or collectively engaged in the context of ISIS in Syria and Iraq between 2013 and 2018. It is concerned with the role of local courts in processing transnational dynamics of violence. As part of the course work, we will study critical socio-legal and transdisciplinary works on the different analytical aspects of terrorism trials. We will look into the construction of social space in trial proceedings, discuss the problem of knowledge, representation, power and agency, and situate the judicial proceedings within the wider public discourse on terrorism in Europe.
One part of this course centers on theoretical and conceptual work e.g. on the understanding and socio-legal scope of terrorism norms, analytical perspectives on the role of courts and possible contexts for engaging in organized violence. The other part of this course integrates empirical work of the participants through case work and the preparation of an analytical case file which may be used in the preparation of the written assignment at the end of the course. We will use the case files to analyse theoretical and conceptual dimensions of cases and jointly reflect on the different aspects of dogmatic, legal, social and empirical positions in the field.

For a graded assessment (benotete Einzelleistung), a presentation and a term paper of approx. 20-30 pages (Rechts- und Regulierungssoziologie) or 6000-8000 words (Soziologie der globalen Welt) must be written. In addition, regular attendance is required, as the sessions are formative. For course credit, a presentation is compulsory.
There will be no retroactive conversion of course credit into graded assessments.
