This seminar focuses on those areas of English grammar and usage that present particular challenges to (already proficient) users of English as a foreign language; its main purpose is to make sure that you have the ability to use grammatical structures, collocations and idiomatic formulations appropriately and correctly in a variety of contexts, with particular attention to the kind of language appropriate to an academic register. Apart from increasing your own mastery, you will, it is hoped, also pick up ideas for effective grammar instruction (which is useful even for those who are not planning to become teachers).

At least 70% of the classroom activities and homework tasks need to be completed to earn credit for this course. Given the limited time available, we can barely scratch the surface in class; participants need to study independently and look for additional material online if they have individual areas of weakness. There is one module examination, the Language Proficiency Test, for all the Language Practice courses. (Basismodul 1). You do not have to take the test in the same semester as the Grammar & Usage seminar, and you should not take it until you have taken part in all the Basis1 seminars.
A corresponding course offer for this course already exists in the e-learning system. Teaching staff can store materials relating to teaching courses there:
