Wie neben den publizierten Texten auch einige unveröffentlichte Skizzen aus seinem Nachlass zeigen, hat Niklas Luhmann schon in den sechziger Jahren und auf der Grundlage der damals aktuellen Version seiner Theorie an einem eigenen Beitrag zur Wissenschaftssoziologie gearbeitet, der sich von der später vorgestellten Fassung des Themas deutlich unterscheidet. Ihr Ausgangspunkt liegt in der Einsicht, dass der Erkenntnisgewinn nur eine Funktion des Wissenschaftssystems neben anderen ist, auch wenn er diesen anderen Funktionen gegenüber einen Primat genießt. Vor allem die unterlegitimierten Aspekte am Verhalten von Wissenschaftlern lassen sich auf dieser Grundlage besser verstehen, als es vom autopoietischen Spätwerk her möglich wäre. Die geplante Lehrveranstaltung soll in diese frühe Konzeption einführen und Ausgangspunkte für ihre Weiterentwicklung identifizieren. Die wissenschaftliche Disziplin, die dabei auch sachthematisch, also auch am Gegenstand Wissenschaft im Vordergrund steht, soll die Soziologie selbst sein.
