Der Titel des Seminars bezieht sich auf ein Werk von John Dewey ("Democracy and Education", 1916), das grundlegende Fragen von Bildung und Erziehung als individueller und gesellschaftlicher Aufgabe anspricht. Der Philosoph John Dewey (1859-1952) ist einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter des amerikanischen Pragmatismus. Seine Gedanken über Wissen, Erfahrung und Erkenntnis haben wesentliche Impulse für alternative Konzepte von Schule und Lernen gegeben. Das Seminar beschäftigt sich vorwiegend mit Texten von und über Dewey. Es ist als Lektüre- und Diskussionsseminar angelegt.

Bereitschaft und Interesse, im Zusammenhang des Seminars ca. 120 Seiten Text zu lesen und sich auch auf einige amerikanische Originaltexte einzulassen.
