The 1960s were a time of great social, political, and cultural upheaval, the results of which can still be seen and felt today. In this course we will look at the civil rights and black power movements, anti-Vietnam war movement, the women’s movement, hippie culture, the beginnings of the ecology movements, the backlash against the consumerism of the 1950s, and the first traces of today’s environmental mobilization. By listening to the songs of the era, reading contemporary newspapers and texts, and watching television reports and films, we can examine this scintillating historical period.
