This course, the first of two parts, is designed for those who have little experience writing creatively, or at least little experience with writing creatively in English. We will discuss various aspects of creative writing, including form and structure. We will also be reading (short) texts from the English-speaking world for inspiration. We will concentrate on short story and poetry writing.
The course will take place in two parts: first, we will meet in person in blocks the two weeks before regular classes start.
Week one will focus on story writing, including (but not limited to) story structure, points of view, character creation, writing dialogue. We will meet:
Monday 23.09.2024 10-15
Tuesday 24.09.2024 10-15
Wednesday 25.09.2024 10-15
Week two will focus on poetry writing, including (but not limited to) poetic forms, poetic devices, introduction to meter. We will meet:
Monday 30.09.2024 10-15
Tuesday 01.10.2024 10-15
Wednesday 02.10.2024 10-15
Meetings will include group work and supplemental reading.
Then, during the regular semester (Vorlesungzeit) you will work on a flash fiction, a short story, and a poem, to be submitted by January 31, 2025. This portfolio of works will utilize the skills learned in the block seminar, and you will have guidance from your teacher. You will also be asked to submit a weekly writing exercise (this will be discussed in class).
No placement test is required for this course. However, a minimum level of B2 is suggested.
