A second viral phenomenon followed the outbreak of COVID-19 worldwide at the beginning of 2020, namely an “information epidemic”. It mixed fears, rumours, misinformation, fake news, and other conspiracy theories, both in traditional and online media. The new “infodemic” reaffirmed the need for social and educational responses to the contemporary crisis of knowledge-making.
What is then the role of schools and educators in these "uncertain times"? Which challenges do children, young people and their families face while exploring the digital environments? How could education for democracy be improved?
Drawing from recent international research in education and social sciences, this block seminar explores the mechanisms of “fake news” production and circulation in traditional and digital media. It also focuses on media education, by explaining the functioning of traditional (mass) media, the processes of news production, and their role for democracies. Finally, the seminar allows to develop critical thinking skills while finding and using digital contents.
