Seminar Do 16-18h und HO/Übung Fr 10-12h, 14-tägig mit Archivbesuch Wuppertal (5. Juni 2014) und Blockveranstaltung (10. und 11. Juli 2014)
Das Modul beschäftigt sich mit Texten und Bildern aus der Geschichte der Photographie im kolonialen Afrika. Wir werden im Seminar ausgewählte Texze zu thematischen Schwerpunkten und bildlichen Genres – Missionsphotographie, Ethnographische Photographie, Landschaftsphotographie, Portraitphotographie, Dokumentarphotographie – lesen und diskutieren. Ausserdem entwickeln wir anhand konkreter Beispiele Fragen und Methoden in der Arbeit mit historischen Photographien aus Afrika. Die Historische Orientierung (Übung) bindet die Lektüren und empirischen Beispiele aus dem Seminar in breitere theoretische Debatten zur Visualität und zur Geschichte der Photographie ein. Wir lesen und diskutieren hier eine Auswahl zentraler Texte von Walter Benjamin, Allan Sekula, W.J.T. Mitchell und Elizabeth Edwards. Im Rahmen der Veranstaltung ist ferner ein Besuch im Missionsarchiv in Wuppertal geplant. Abgeschlossen wird das Modul in einer Blockverantaltung am Ende des Semesters
