The historical contextualization provides a methodic-theoretical and sources-based overview in which contexts the body is mentioned in early modern travelogues. It wants to investigate which role the body and comparisons of the body played in situations of cultural contact and how European travelers use the body in their travel narratives to construct order in diversity or to establish similarity and difference between them and the inhabitants of the contact zone.
It introduces the theoretical concepts in body history and the approaches in which the body could be historicized. This is connected with an introduction to the sources of European travelers into the Ottoman Empire. Especially this interreligious setting of cultural contact provides an interesting perspective to investigate the role of the body in European travelogues and the conception of the body by European travelers.
The course wants to analyze the early modern body as a body which is entangled in a broad field of discourses and contexts and could therefore be useful for travelers to produce identity and affiliation.
