Die Veranstaltung führt in zentrale Theorie- und Analyseperspektiven soziologischer Geschlechterforschung ein. Ausgehend von der Frage, wie es gesellschaftsgeschichtlich gesehen gelungen ist, biologische Merkmale als dauerhafte Garanten sozialer Arrangements geltend zu machen (Goffman), wird im ersten Schritt behandelt, wie sich Geschlecht im Übergang von der Neuzeit zur Moderne als primäre Strukturkategorie ausdifferenziert hat und seither als solche behauptet. Im zweiten Schritt steht das Verhältnis von Wandel und Stabilität der Geschlechterordnung in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts im Mittelpunkt; zu seiner Diskussion werden relevante geschlechtertheoretische Theoriedebatten und -ansätze (etwa interpretive turn, Poststrukturalismus) und ihre programmatischen Weiterführungen (etwa Queer Theory) behandelt. Kernanliegen der Veranstaltung ist die Beobachtung der Kategorie Geschlecht aus unterschiedlichen Analyse- und Theorieperspektiven wie Interaktion, Institution, Organisation und Wissen.
