Ursprünglich die Wissenschaft von zahlenmäßig meist kleinen, "ethnischen Gruppen", die sich zudem häufig im Expansionsgebiet europäischer Kolonialstaaten befanden, stand die Ethnologie oder Völkerkunde in Deutschland lange eher am Rande der sozialwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen. Das ist international ganz anders, und zudem hat sich die Sozial- und Kulturanthropologie, wie wir sie inzwischen nennen, zu einem wichtigen Knotenpunkt in der Auseinandersetzung mit allgemeinen Fragen von Gesellschaft in der diversen und globalisierten Welt entwickelt. Dabei trägt die Disziplin neben der ethnographischen Methode spezifische Perspektiven bei, die sich aus dem intensiven Kontakt mit Menschen mit einer ganz anderen Lebensrealität ergeben.
In dieser Veranstaltung beschäftigen wir uns mit den Grundlagen von Sozial- und Kulturanthropologie und werfen einen Blick in die Gegenwart ethnographischer Forschung. Neben klassischen Texte zu Themen wie Kultur, politische Organisation, Verwandtschaft, Ökonomie, Religion, Gender und Sprache werden wir auch Literatur besprechen, die die Beiträge heutiger Sozial- und Kulturanthropolog*innen repräsentiert.
Vorausgesetzt wird die Bereitschaft, sich mit einigen Texten in englischer Sprache auseinanderzusetzen.
