In den letzten Jahren haben die verschiedenen Dimensionen sozialer Räume in der Soziologie eine besondere Aufmerksamkeit erfahren. Ausgehend von der grundlegenden Einsicht, dass alle sozialen Phänomene, von Handlungen über Institutionen bis hin zu Feldern und Systemen, einen räumlichen Bezug haben, beziehungsweise in individuellen raumzeitlichen Kontexten aktualisiert und realisiert werden, werden soziale Räume – neben den temporalen Dimensionen – als unhintergehbare Voraussetzungen und Bedingungen sozialer Ereignisse und Ordnungen analysiert. Im Seminar kommen dabei die verschiedenen Raumkonzepte (abstrakte und konkrete Räume, Orte, Lokalitäten, Grenzen etc.) zur Sprache. Zunächst werden in theoriegeschichtlicher Perspektive wichtige Konzepte und theoretische Optionen erörtert. Anschließend werden bestimmte soziale Räume analysiert, wobei selbstverständlich urbane Sozialräume, also Städte, Metropolen, Zentren und so genannte Mega-Cities eine besondere Rolle spielen. Aber auch das Land, die Dörfer und die so genannten Provinzen oder Peripherien werden berücksichtigt. Das Seminar schließt mit architektursoziologischen Analysen.
