230079 Teaching English Language (weiterführende Schulen) (S) (SoSe 2016)

Contents, comment

This course will cover the teaching of lessons which focus on: grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening skills, oral fluency, writing. In the first part of the course some basic approaches, techniques and sample materials will be presented to the seminar group. In the specond part of the course, students will be asked to plan, present and micro-teach parts of a lesson of their own. This lesson will be aimed at a specific year in a specific school type. After each micro-teaching presentation the seminar group will be encouraged to provide critical feedback within a framework of reflection on the lesson.

We will cover lessons from fifth class up to the tenth class. In the lessons we will be paying attention in particular to:

  • relating material to the interests and experience of the learners
  • modifying and/or supplementing the course-book material
  • achieving transitions between teaching stages,
  • linking new material to previously learned material
  • providing scaffolding for learners
  • exploiting both inductive and deductive approaches to learning
  • encouraging the development of learner autonomy
  • creating opportunities for negotiation of meaning
  • creating opportunities for individualised learning
  • linking the schoolbook material to authentic material

Before the course students should make themselves familiar with some of the schoolbooks available in the Dauersemesterapparat in the library.
