Wir sind gewöhnt, Wachstum als volkswirtschaftliche Beschreibungsgröße hinzunehmen. In diesem Seminar "Theorie transnational" schauen wir über diesen Horizont hinaus und betrachten "Wachstum" als transnational wirksames Geschichtlichkeitsregime (im Anschluss an François Hartog). Zu klären ist dabei zunächst, woher Ideen wie ökonomisches Wachstum und seine Grenzen überhaupt kommen? Welche historische Rolle spielte das Bevölkerungswachstum bei der Entstehung moderner Wachstumsgesellschaften? Im Fokus unseres Interesses steht, dass Wachstum nicht nur eine ökonomisch beschreibbare Tatsache ist, sondern eine Zukunftserwartung, die seit geraumer Zeit bereits alle modernen Volkswirtschaften antreibt und damit auch politische Entscheidungsprozesse -- einschließlich Wahlen -- beeinflusst. Wachstum ist Teil eines modernen Entwicklungs- und Fortschrittsdenkens. Aber kann man auch so weit gehen, Wachstum als eine Art Grundgesetz moderner Gesellschaften zu begreifen? Und was bedeutet es, wenn dieses Wachstum an Ressourcengrenzen oder an planetare -- also letztlich ökologische -- Grenzen stößt? Wachstum ist heute ins Zentrum der ökologischen Zukunftsdebatte gerückt. Dabei gilt einigen "degrowth" als als Ausweg aus der (drohenden) ökologischen Katastrophe und als möglicher Pfad in die nachhaltige Gesellschaft.
