Kaum ein Konzept modernen politischen Denkens verbindet sich so eng mit der Ära der Nationalstaaten wie das der Souveränität. Könnte es in Zeiten zunehmender Denationalisierung daher zunächst so scheinen, als würde die Kategorie der Souveränität verblassen, zeigt sich dennoch in vielen wesentlichen Bereichen des Politischen die anhaltende Wirkung souveräner Macht – gerade auch dort, wo sie sich Transformations- oder vielleicht sogar Auflösungserscheinungen ausgesetzt sieht, wie etwa auf den Feldern der inneren und äußeren Sicherheit.
Das Seminar setzt sich zum einen mit der Theoriegeschichte des Souveränitätsdenkens auseinander (Bodin, Hobbes, Schmitt u.a.) und erkundet zum anderen jüngere Ansätze einer Kritik von Souveränität und souveräner Macht (Derrida, Agamben u.a.), in deren Entfaltung zudem andere zentrale politische Kategorien wie die des Staates oder des Rechts in ein kritisches Licht getaucht werden.
