In dem Maße, in dem Politik dem Staat entwächst, stellt sich die Frage, welche Folgen dies für das demokratische Selbstregieren hat. Um diese Frage herum hat sich in jüngerer Zeit eine breite Debatte entsponnen. Das Seminar dient einer Erkundung der Theoriekontroverse, die sich im Anschluss an die Diagnose einer Denationalisierung des Politischen um Begriffe wie kosmopolitische, globale oder transnationale Demokratie entwickelt hat. Dabei wird es immer auch um die kritische Frageperspektive gehen, ob sich mit den genannten Begriffen derzeit etwas anderes als Wunschdenken verbinden kann.
Im Seminar werden wir uns mit u. a. den Positionen von David Held, Seyla Benhabib, Nancy Fraser und Chantal Mouffe auseinandersetzen.
