Terms and conditions of employment are under change. Why are some countries more successful in creating employment than others? Can we identify national patterns of employment relations? Are employment systems and practices converging to a common form across countries? What impact had/has the global financial crisis on employment relations? How is the relation between institutions and employment relations? To answer these questions, the seminar looks first at different approaches, i.e. Varieties of Capitalism, Institutionalism or Regulation Theory. Second, we will look at different employment systems in the Global North and the Global South. Finally, current changes and challenges regarding wage setting mechanisms, the rise of informal sectors, precarious work, the organization of care work and gender will be discussed.
