Die soziologische Systemtheorie, wie sie vor allem von Niklas Luhmann vertreten wird, hat der mediensoziologischen Forschung richtungweisende Impulse verliehen. Die Massenmedien werden jetzt nicht länger als abzulehnende, weil auf die Gesellschaft nur repressiv einwirkende Einrichtungen behandelt, sondern als konstitutive Faktoren gesellschaftlicher Entwicklung. Das Seminar dient der Einführung in dieses Verständnis der Massenmedien.
