Das Seminar bietet eine Einführung in die Geschichte der ukrainischen Nation und Staatlichkeit im Kontext imperialer, transnationaler und nachbarschaftlicher Verflechtungen. Mit einem Schwerpunkt auf dem 19. und 20. Jahrhundert werden wir militärische Konflikte, geopolitische Konstellationen, Russifizierung, Urbanisierung, Migration sowie Aufstände, Revolutionen und Gewaltausbrüche im Spannungsfeld zwischen Tradition und Moderne ausloten. Zentrale historische Konzepte wie Macht, Staat, Nation, Bürgerschaft, Geschlecht, Religion und Individuum werden dabei kritisch reflektiert. Zudem erhalten die Studierenden Einblicke in historiographische Debatten und methodologische Perspektiven auf die Geschichte der Ukraine, des Russländischen Imperiums und der Sowjetunion. Schließlich setzen wir uns mit der Frage auseinander, warum es wichtig ist, die Rolle der Ukraine in der Geschichte und Gegenwart Europas und der Welt zu verstehen.
Aktive Teilnahme sowie die Bereitschaft zur Lektüre englischsprachiger Texte werden erwartet.
