There are 30 places in this class.
Credits
This course is the equivalent of two courses in Profile Module 3: Britain and rates therefore six (6) credit points. Students are expected to contribute actively to class work and prepare a book report-cum-presentation. An additional 3 credits can be earned for a long essay/term paper.
Contents:
There will be four major and three minor themes that we will examine using primary (historical, literary) and secondary texts, films and TV programmes, amongst them the recent BBC Scotland series "Writing Scotland" (8 programmes; September to November 2004).
The four major themes are Scottish nationalism - From the Wars of Independence to Devolution; language, education and religion; romance, the Highlands and the House of Stewart; and the Scottish Islands. To round off the class and by way of recapitulation, there will be sessions on the three major Scottish cities, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen, their historical importance and present status.
