Contents
There will be four major and three minor themes that we will examine using primary (historical, literary) and secondary texts, films and TV programmes, amongst them the recent BBC Scotland series "Writing Scotland" (8 programmes; September to November 2004).
The first part, however, will be devoted to a study of Scotland in the 20th century.
The four major themes are Scottish nationalism ¿ From the Wars of Independence to Devolution; language, education and religion; the Highlands and the House of Stewart; and the Scottish Islands.
To round off the class, and by way of recapitulation of some aspects of the four themes, there will be sessions on the three major Scottish cities, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen, their historical importance and present status.
