230729 Special Topics: The History, Culture, and Architecture of Brighton (S) (SoSe 2021)

Contents, comment

This course will look at one of the main cities on the south coast of England: Brighton! Students will be able to practise their speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills by learning about the varied history of Brighton and its place in the UK, the tradition of art, literature, film, and culture that makes it one of the very special places to visit and live. We will also be looking at the incredible historical and modern architecture which sets it apart from any other city, and examining the current events that impact on the city, including Brexit.
As part of the course, students will plan a sightseeing trip to Brighton, selecting and reporting on important places to see as part of the itinerary. After the end of the semester we will take a trip as a group to see as much of the city that we have been talking about throughout the semester. This will be dependent on the situation with travel restrictions. Please note: Going on the trip is optional and credit points are not awarded on the basis of participation.
