Eingrenzung eines Themas und Einbettung in den Stand der Forschung (welcher Grad an Originalität ist erforderlich und was am Stand der Forschung ist relevant für die eigene Arbeit);
Formulierung gehaltvoller Forschungsfragen und Hypothesen (analytische statt deskriptive Fragen); welche Daten sind für die Beantwortung der Fragen und umgekehrt: welche Fragen kann ich mit vorhandenen Daten gut bearbeiten und welche eher nicht; was ist bei der Operationalisierung zu beachten; welche Fallstricke des Textaufbaus sind zu vermeiden.
Dazu können an sofort Themenvorschläge gemacht werden, die in der LEF aufgegriffen werden können. Ansonsten wird dies an klassischen Fragestellungen der Sozialstruktur- und Ungleichheitsforschung durchgespielt.
