Die Wurzeln für unsere sprachlichen und kommunikativen Fähigkeiten und damit nicht zuletzt auch für den Schriftspracherwerb in der Schule werden früh gelegt. Schon vor der Geburt sind Kinder dazu in der Lage, den Klang menschlicher Sprache von anderen Geräuschen zu unterscheiden. Mit wenigen Wochen können sie subtile lautliche Differenzen wahrnehmen, mit einem Jahr äußern sie ihre ersten Wörter, und wenn sie in das Schulalter eintreten, verfügen sie nicht nur über einen entwickelten Wortschatz und die meisten grammatischen Mittel ihrer Erstsprache, sondern sie können auch in komplexer Form mit ihrer Umwelt kommunizieren, also Geschichten erzählen, argumentieren und anderes mehr. Die meisten Menschen erwerben in ihrem Leben jedoch mehr als nur eine Sprache. Die Beherrschung von Fremdsprachen gehört zu den Schlüsselkompetenzen in einer zunehmend globalisierten Welt. Darüber hinaus wächst in Deutschland eine erhebliche Zahl von Kindern zwei- oder mehrsprachig auf. Mehrsprachigkeit betrifft also in mehr als nur einer Hinsicht auch das Lernen in der Schule.
Der Kurs bietet einen Überblick über theoretische Modelle, empirische Forschungsresultate und anwendungsbezogene Aspekte zum Erst- und Zweitspracherwerb sowie zum schulischen Schriftspracherwerb.
