Das Feuilleton ist ein Produkt der französischen Revolution. In den Zeitungen war für diese Kleinform lange Zeit der Raum „unter dem Strich“ reserviert, durch ihre stoffliche Unbegrenztheit und das schwer bestimmbare Gewicht ihrer Aussagen zog sie viel Schelte auf sich. Allen voran urteilte Hermann Hesse über Feuilletons als ‚nichtige Interessantheiten‘. Seine spezifische Kontur erhält das Feuilleton als Genre jedenfalls im Spannungsfeld „von journalistischer Sachgebundenheit und literarischer Verwandlungsfreiheit, von (kultur-)politischer Debatte und flüchtigem Sprachspiel, von sachlicher Kritik und subjektiver Gestimmtheit“ (Kernmayer).
In dem Seminar konzentrieren wir uns auf die Geschichte, die Konjunkturen und die Umbrüche dieser journalistisch-literarischen Kleinform und untersuchen exemplarisch Stoff, Stil und Geist der Feuilletons von Heinrich v. Kleist über Joseph Roth und Gabrielle Tergit bis hin zu Carolin Emcke. In der Analyse wird selbstverständlich auch deren typografisch-mediale und kulturelle Funktion von Bedeutung sein.
