230355 Australian and New Zealand English (BS) (SoSe 2024)

Contents, comment

Australia and New Zealand share a relatively recent history of European settlement, colonization, and immigration, beginning with the arrival of Captain Cook in Australia in 1770. Australia subsequently became a penal colony, and New Zealand was established as a colony in 1840.
This class focuses on the major varieties of English spoken in Australia and New Zealand as a result of this settlement, namely Australian English (AusE) and New Zealand English (NZE). We will explore AusE and NZE from a linguistic perspective, considering both theoretical backgrounds and case studies. Our focus will be on various linguistic levels, such as phonology, morphology, syntax, lexis, and pragmatics. Additionally, this class will examine the interplay between the language brought by European settlers and the languages of the indigenous peoples, namely Aboriginal Australians and Māori.
We will also explore the connections between language and multicultural/multi-ethnic identities in both countries. Applying our knowledge of linguistic structures and meanings, we will analyse examples of language use in various 'Aussie' and 'Kiwi' media formats.
