This course will survey the four major English Romantic poets Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats, and Shelley with selected examples from their most remarkable work. A particular focus will lie on the socio-cultural environment of the poems' emergence.

A reader containing the course texts will be available in the first class meeting.

Recommended reading:

Abrams, Meyer H., The Mirror and the Lamp: Romantic Theory and the Critical Tradition. New York 1953 u.ö.
Butler, Marilyn, Romantics, Rebels, and Reactionaries: English Literature and its Background. 1760 to 1830.

Three credit points will be awarded for attendance (1), an oral presentation of one poem (1) and a written essay on that poem (1).
